The objective of this class is to motivate the scholar to do the hard work of learning through: inspiring mentors, high-quality content, positive peer pressure, collaborative serivce, and individual follow through. Mentors, parents, and students will work together to create an atmosphere of great learning and inspiration for each individual student. Students develop leadership skills by taking turns leading in different class activities including:
Reading and discussing youth selected books
document studies
transformational models and simulations
field trips and guest speakers
Working on individual projects and goals of interest and sharing them with the class in a positive peer review environment.
Class service project each quarter chosen by the class and carried out as a group.
MATERIALS: Students will need to purchase their own books or check them out from the library.

Recognize Literary Elements such as plot, character, setting, theme, symbolism, and point of view.
Analyze Themes and Ideas and messages conveyed in literary works.
Evaluate different interpretations of a text, synthesize information from various sources, and form their own informed opinions.
Develop the ability to write clear, concise, and well-supported literary analysis
Participate in class discussions, articulate their interpretations, and engage in respectful debate about literary works.
Analyze how literary works are shaped by and reflect the social, historical, and cultural contexts in which they were produced.

Analyze historical trends and significance.
